New Book: "The Boston Economy" Understanding and Accessing One of the World’s Greatest Job Markets (2016 edition)

(BOSTON, MA- March 21, 2016)  Boston, Mass. — Boston’s strong economy and the opportunities it offers for college students and job seekers is the focus of a new book by George Donnelly, former editor of the Boston Business Journal.

THE BOSTON ECONOMY: Understanding and Accessing One of the World’s Greatest Job Markets explores the makeup and outlook in the Boston region’s various sectors, including startups, biotech, health care, commercial real estate, and professional services. It also provides advice from area executives and recent graduates on gaining a foothold in the Boston economy and examines key economic policy challenges for Boston and Massachusetts.

“Boston has one of the strongest and most balanced economies in the country, but most of its activity is a mystery to its students and recent grads,” Donnelly said. “Boston excels at many things, but not at promoting its own economy to the next-generation workforce living right under its nose. My book is a first-of-its-kind resource for people to better grasp and take advantage of our dynamic and rapidly changing economy.”

Among the topics covered in The Boston Economy:
  • Fascinating local startups and how to join one;
  • Understanding Boston’s changing marketing and media industry;
  • Boston’s growing role as an international business hub;
  • Opportunities and challenges in financial services;
  • Understanding the leading biotechs and the science behind their success;
  • Who’s who in the Boston business scene;
  • Challenges to Boston’s growth: Transportation, housing and workforce development issues.
The Boston Economy is an invaluable resource for exploring both the granular detail and big-picture themes of a vibrant business scene.  Published by Boston Economy Publishing Inc., the book is available via www.bostoneconomy.com or on Amazon.

Diamond Exchange Tickets Auction at Taste of Eastie Enables Winners to Attend Celtics Game

On January 29, Ida Candreva and her friends were able to enjoy a wonderful evening watching the Celtics play at TD Garden courtesy tickets donated to East Boston Main Streets’ Taste of Eastie live auction by Walter Yourawski, owner of the East Boston Diamond and Gold Exchange.

The experience of the evening was tremendously enhanced by a limo ride to and from the Garden, a visit to the scoreboard with Ed Palladino, and the opportunity to meet the players and the cheerleaders, all courtesy the generosity of Joe Ruggiero from the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home.

Joe, who has become somewhat of a fixture at the Taste of Eastie continued his ongoing support of East Boston’s non-profit community by serving once again as the energetic, well-loved auctioneer at the Taste – and encouraging bidding by adding all kinds of generous incentives to the process.

East Boston Main Streets would like to thank all the restaurants who participated in the Taste of Eastie, all our guests and supporters, and particularly Joe Ruggiero and Walter Yourawski.

Local EB Restaurants Shine at 18th Annual Taste of Eastie

(East Boston, MA.  27 January-2014) More than 350 guests braved the blizzard and joined 30 restaurants for a fantastic evening of Food and Good Cheer at the Hilton Logan Airport Hotel on Tuesday evening, January 21st.  The cold temperatures and heavy snowfall created an additional challenge for the participating food establishments, but, as usual they arrived with their delicious appetizers, entrees, and desserts and were well rewarded by a ballroom full of both long-time supporters and first-timers to the Taste of Eastie.

East Boston locals and other Bostonians as well as our neighbors from Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop, Cambridge, and Somerville were joined by guest from Australia, Taiwan, Germany, and France for an amazing evening among friends.

East Boston Main Streets would like to thank Representative Carlo Basile for his tireless support of East Boston Main Streets and advocacy on behalf of our Seniors.  We also thank our presenting sponsor, MassPort, for their generosity and technical assistance.  We further thank East Boston Savings Bank, the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, Suffolk Downs, the Boston Main Streets Foundation, the East Boston Chamber of Commerce, Citizens Bank, as well as Boston Main Streets and the Mayor’s Office for their ongoing support.  Lastly, we applaud all the volunteers who make this evening possible and a tremendous success, year after year!

Opposition mounting to entertainment license for Taco-Mex

This email arrived today from Susan Van Tuyl, a resident of Maverick Square.
As a resident of Maverick Square I am sending you this notice as to the change in use of Taco-Mex.  Taco-Mex located at 65-67 Maverick Square, is applying for an entertainment license.  Given the history of the owner's previous venue with an entertainment license in Orient Heights (involving police and numerous arrests), this is not, in my opinion, the best thing for Maverick Square, especially neighboring residences.  Those of us that front on the Square already have to deal with the noise generated by Eddie C's.  Having entertainment on this side of the Square - directly below our windows - can only add to the disturbance.  The Owner of Taco-Mex has stated that the entertainment will only be one classical guitar. But that detail has been omitted from the petition to the Board of Appeal.

The hearing is scheduled at City Hall on September 20th, at 10:30 a.m.  If you have an opinion on this matter; if you have a concern, either for or against - just showing up at the hearing will have little or no affect - by then approval will be a done deal.  Opinions must be voiced to the Commission in advance.  The telephone number is 617-635-4775.  I will try to find an e-mail address.
