Revere Casino Opponents Plan March, From Parish Church To City Hall on Sunday, Feb 25

(REVERE, MA) With the Feb. 25th casino referendum just days away, Don’t Gamble on Revere and Friends of Revere have called for a public march this Sunday, Feb. 23rd, from Immaculate Conception Parish Church to Revere City Hall.

The Salvadorian Marching Peace Band will be leading the lively procession, and a brief rally in front of Revere’s City Hall will include a program of speakers encouraging Revere residents to vote ‘No’ on Feb. 25 and to not be intimidated by pro-casino forces.

“In the span of thirty years” explains Tim Bogertman, Associate Pastor at First Congregational Church and one of the organizers of Sunday’s march, “Revere has gone from being one of the least diverse cities in the state to perhaps the most diverse.  Many of our residents immigrated to the United States from countries where opposition to the political establishment simply did not exist, and we want to assure our friends and neighbors that they are free to vote their conscience next Tuesday, regardless of official voices urging them to support the proposed casino.”

“Predatory gambling is simply not in the best interest of our community,” states Father George Szal of Immaculate Conception Parish, where Sunday’s march will commence, “and Tuesday’s vote is far from a done deal.”

Sunday’s march starts at 1 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish Church (127 Winthrop Avenue), and will end with a rally at Revere City Hall (281 Broadway).

Revere Anti-Casino Groups Express Concerns About ‘Free And Fair’ Election On Feb. 25

(Revere, MA, February 20, 2014) – With less than one week to go until the casino referendum, Don’t Gamble on Revere and Friends of Revere express significant concern about what they describe as an “environment of fear and intimidation” that is being created in Revere surrounding the casino issue.

The casino opponents specifically point towards a Channel 5 investigative report regarding Revere City Councilor Ira Novoselsky approaching and intimidating immigrant business owners to replace anti-casino signs with pro-casino signs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D--kiwo2wz4), as well as Mayor Dan Rizzo sending multiple letters to Revere citizens on behalf of Mohegan Sun.

Joseph Catricala, spokesperson for Don’t Gamble on Revere, states, “Weekly letters paid for by Friends of Mohegan Sun are being sent out with Mayor Rizzo urging citizens to vote ‘Yes’ and claiming if citizens vote ‘No’ then they don’t support Revere.  “These actions,” Catricala explains, “are creating an environment of fear and intimidation for voters and business owners within the city to ‘toe the line’ when it comes to the vote, or face the consequences.”

The casino opponents claim that what is at stake in Tuesday’s election is much larger than the ill effects of a casino.  “If official intimidation is to stand as the status quo now, what will happen if Revere becomes a casino town?” asks Pastor Tim Bogertman of Revere’s First Congregational Church, a founding member of Friends of Revere.  “We have called the Attorney General’s office about these issues, and they have promised to look into the matter further.”

Multiple faith leaders from Revere – including Catholic priests, Protestant pastors, a Rabbi and an Imam – led a rally at Revere’ Immaculate Conception Parish this past Sunday to encourage residents that they can vote ‘No’ on Tuesday, and to assure them that clergy and others are standing with them in their opposition to the proposed casino.

The casino opponents are also sending open letters to William Galvin, Secretary of the Commonwealth, and to Martha Coakley, the Attorney General, regarding their concerns and they are requesting official monitoring of the polls on the day of the vote.

Declaring Revere Casino ‘Not A Done Deal’ Clergy Call for Prayer on Sunday

(REVERE, MA - February 14, 2014) Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim leaders in Revere have called upon their respective communities to gather at the sanctuary of Immaculate Conception Parish at 1 PM on Sunday, February 16, for an ecumenical prayer gathering expected to draw hundreds of Revere residents.

“This is a gathering for all people of faith who are opposed to the casino” says Tim Bogertman, Associate Pastor of First Congregational Church in Revere.  “It will be a time to pray, speak, and encourage others to stand against this disastrous casino plan that will negatively impact the lives of people living here.”

Friends of Revere (www.friendsofrevere.com) – a diverse group of pastors, priests and ministers representing various traditions, denominations and congregations in Revere – have called for Sunday’s gathering because they are deeply concerned about the impact of a casino in their community, what they describe as “a direct threat to the families and children who live in Revere.”

Pastor Nely Esturban of Betel Church in Revere says, “I want peace for the city of Revere.  Let me tell you why – I love my kids, I love my city, and I don’t want to bring about the destruction of my city.  We don’t need a casino here.”

In conversation with hundreds of congregants and parishioners, the ministers claim the casino is far from decided in the minds of people in Revere.  “I thought the casino was a done deal,” explains Father George Szal of Immaculate Conception Church, “but then I began speaking with my parishioners and more than half of them are opposed to the casino.  This is not a done deal at all.”

Members of Friends of Revere continue to lead their congregations, mosques and synagogues in what has been several weeks of prayer for positive future development in Revere, and they have also been preaching about the harmful effects that a casino will have in their neighborhood.  Rabbi Joseph Berman, a founding member of Friends of Revere, explains his opposition to the casino in straightforward terms, “Casinos prey on the most vulnerable members of our communities, and they increase poverty, addiction, and crime.”

“Sunday’s ecumenical prayer gathering at Immaculate Conception is a time to declare that God has something better for this town than a casino,” says Pastor Bogertman, “and all are welcome.”

City Hall: Schools to be closed 2/5: Snow Emergency and Parking Ban in Effect Tonight (2/4) at 11PM

Boston Public Schools Closed Tomorrow

Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced City response plans for the winter storm expected to begin early tomorrow morning. The Mayor has declared a Snow Emergency and Parking Ban for the City of Boston, in effect tonight, Tuesday, February 4, at 11:00 p.m. Boston Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, February 5. City Hall will be open for business as usual.

“Our team is ready for this storm,” Mayor Walsh said. “We’re expecting a very difficult morning commute, and for that reason we’re urging everyone to use public transportation to travel in and around the city tomorrow."

National Weather Service has declared a Winter Weather Warning in effect for the City of Boston from midnight through 6:00 p.m. Wednesday. Latest forecasts indicate the storm is expected to result in 6 to 10 inches of snow in Boston, with heaviest snow fall beginning at 6 a.m, at a rate of an inch an hour. Another significant storm is expected for this weekend, and dropping temperatures are forecast, emphasizing the importance for Public Works crews to get as close to the curb as possible in their snow clearing during tomorrow’s storm.

All Boston Centers for Youth & Families centers will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow. Children ages 7 and older are welcome, and any child under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at drop-off to fill out a short intake form.

During declared snow emergencies, discounted parking is available at several parking lots and garages to cars that display Boston resident parking stickers. Discounted parking is available starting at 9:00 p.m. tonight: http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/parkingmap.asp.

Public Works

Public Works teams will begin pre-treating roads at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Crews are prepared for the snow event, and will have more than 500 pieces of equipment active on City streets by 6 a.m.
Regularly scheduled trash and recycling collection will begin one hour early, at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Transportation

During a Snow Emergency, parking is prohibited on all major arteries in Boston. These streets are posted with “Tow Zone No Parking During Snow Emergency” signs. A listing of major arteries and alternate parking can be found at http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/parking/.
On streets other than major arteries, parking within 20 feet of an intersection or further than one foot from the curb is prohibited, as this impedes access for both emergency vehicles and snow plows.

Public Safety

Boston Police, Boston Fire, and Boston EMS will have additional staff on hand throughout the duration of storm.
Boston Police will be posted at major intersections during tomorrow’s morning and evening commute to assist with traffic flow.
The City's Emergency Operations Center has been activated and staffed with all relevant City departments.

Cold Weather Safety Reminders

Carbon Monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas that results from combustion and can quickly become fatal. Residents should clear snow and debris away from mufflers before starting the car and ensure that external vents are cleared of snow. If you are using a generator, make sure it is far enough away to vent air and gases away from the home.
To protect against forecasted cold temperatures, people should layer clothing and minimize outdoor activity.  Over a dozen people in Boston suffered injuries related to hypothermia during the last extreme cold weather snap.
The City's homeless shelters have activated emergency procedures. The City's Shelter Commission asks that any resident who sees a potential medical emergency involving a homeless person dial 9-1-1.
Property owners are required to salt and sand sidewalks, stairs and pedestrian ramps to prevent slippery surfaces.
Residents are encouraged to shovel out hydrants and catch basins near or abutting their property to assist our public safety agencies and protect against flooding.
Please check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need help.
Use caution when walking near buildings that may have falling snow or ice.
Shoveling snow can pose a serious health safety risk to persons with heart disease and senior citizens. Residents should consider seeking the assistance of a family member, a helpful neighbor or hire someone to help.
Additional cold weather safety tips can be found at: http://www.cityofboston.gov/cold/safety.asp.

The Mayor's 24-Hour Hotline will have additional staff on-hand and residents with weather-related questions or concerns, including down power lines, down trees or icy conditions, should call (617) 635-4500.

Residents are encouraged to use the City’s “Know Snow” program for access to other important storm-related information. To receive notifications, register for the City’s Alert Boston network at http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/. For updates & questions via Twitter, use @NotifyBoston, follow #bosnow.

Diamond Exchange Tickets Auction at Taste of Eastie Enables Winners to Attend Celtics Game

On January 29, Ida Candreva and her friends were able to enjoy a wonderful evening watching the Celtics play at TD Garden courtesy tickets donated to East Boston Main Streets’ Taste of Eastie live auction by Walter Yourawski, owner of the East Boston Diamond and Gold Exchange.

The experience of the evening was tremendously enhanced by a limo ride to and from the Garden, a visit to the scoreboard with Ed Palladino, and the opportunity to meet the players and the cheerleaders, all courtesy the generosity of Joe Ruggiero from the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home.

Joe, who has become somewhat of a fixture at the Taste of Eastie continued his ongoing support of East Boston’s non-profit community by serving once again as the energetic, well-loved auctioneer at the Taste – and encouraging bidding by adding all kinds of generous incentives to the process.

East Boston Main Streets would like to thank all the restaurants who participated in the Taste of Eastie, all our guests and supporters, and particularly Joe Ruggiero and Walter Yourawski.
