'Hitting the ground running,' Rep. Madaro Files $300,000 in Budget Amendments for East Boston

(East Boston, April 21, 2015)  - State Representative Adrian Madaro filed three crucial budget amendments during his first full week in office. The amendments dedicate nearly $300,000 to East Boston to improve public safety at Constitution Beach, increase resources to address substance abuse in East Boston, and supports Project Bread’s local farming initiative.

The House Budget process is one of the most important opportunities for a State Representative to prioritize funding for his community. Despite being in office for only a week, Representative Madaro capitalized on his years of experience as Chief of Staff to former Representative Carlo Basile to hit the ground running.

“The East Boston Neighborhood Health Center has a 24/7 ER, but has no substance abuse counselors during the nights and weekends” said Representative Madaro.  “The $150k that I included in my budget amendment would enable the Health Center to hire substance abuse counseling during these times when they experience the highest volume of people seeking substance abuse treatment/services.”       

Representative Madaro also proposed $120,000 to support Project Bread and the Massachusetts Farm to School Project, which takes locally grown fruits and vegetables and distributes them to low income families in East Boston and beyond.

Another amendment dedicates $25,000 for State Police to patrol Constitution Beach.

Candidate Adrian Madaro Proposes Plan to Lower Taxes and Expand Soundproofing for East Boston Residents Affected by Logan Airport

(East Boston, January 26, 2015) - This week candidate for State Representative Adrian Madaro announced several proposals to mitigate the impact of Logan Airport on the residents and businesses of East Boston, including a new tax abatement for properties negatively affected by noise pollution from the airport as well as expanding subsidies to sound proof windows.

Citing residents near Chicago’s O’Hare Airport who won tax appeals after arguing their properties lost value due to noise pollution, Madaro said a similar measure should be enacted in East Boston.

“The people of East Boston should receive a tax abatement for the loss of property value caused by this noise pollution.” Madaro continued. “Residents in Chicago saw up to a 12% reduction in their taxes. Those savings would make a big difference for many families here.”

“In addition to this tax break, it’s my belief that every single household in East Boston should be eligible for sound proof windows.” said Madaro. “and I will work with the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to expand the noise contour map to cover our entire community.”

To cover costs of these proposals, Madaro suggested that a portion of the roughly $18 million that Massport currently pays annually to the City of Boston as a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) be dedicated to lowering the property taxes of affected East Boston residents. Currently those funds are not specifically dedicated to East Boston and can be spent throughout the City.

“The payments that Massport makes to the City should be spent here in East Boston” said Madaro. “We are the ones that are most affected by the air and noise pollution and I will work with Massport and through the legislative process at the State House to ensure that these funds are used to specifically help Eastie residents.”

Adrian Madaro Kicks-off Campaign for State Rep with Over 200 Supporters at the Jeffries Yacht Club

(EAST BOSTON, January 19, 2015) Surrounded by over 200 supporters Adrian Madaro, candidate for State Representative, held his official campaign kick-off event at the Jeffries Yacht Club last week.   

Campaign Manager Liana LaMattina, introduced Madaro. “When I think of our next generation of leaders here in East Boston, I think of Adrian. He is a prime example of a product of the environment here in East Boston.” She said. “He is a product of the love and commitment to community that many great leaders in Eastie have taught us in the past. And I know that he will continue that legacy."

Addressing the packed room, Madaro shared his reasons for running and laid out his vision for East Boston.

“I feel blessed to be born and raised in East Boston, whether it was playing little league baseball or pop warner football, learning how to play drums at Zumix, or getting involved in community clean ups with my mom and her civic group.” Adrian said “My family made sure that I was invested in my community and that I loved East Boston. That’s why I am running for State Representative. I want to be the first person you think of calling when you need help and I want to be your advocate on Beacon Hill.”

Madaro went on to thank his family for their support and State Representative Carlo Basile for his mentorship.

“This commitment to public service and community is in my DNA. I learned it from my family and strengthened it these past four years working for Representative Basile as his Chief of Staff.” Adrian continued, “I’m so grateful for Rep Basile’s mentorship as he’s prepared me to be an effective and passionate advocate for East Boston on day one.”
