I am proud to announce my endorsement of Steve Morabito as the Democratic nominee for State Senator for the First Suffolk and Middlesex district of Massachusetts. I have come across many public servants and politicians from my tenure at the White House to my campaign for Lt. Governor of Massachusetts, but Steve truly stands out for his passion, commitment to community, energy and the breadth and depth of his ideas. He has the commonsense leadership and experience that will make him the type of State Senator the people of the district deserve. 

Frankly, beyond his obvious qualifications, the reason I am supporting Steve and ask the residents of the First Suffolk and Middlesex district to do the same is because Steve understands the importance of standing up for others, taking action, being accountable and being loyal to the community that you serve. We need more leaders just like Steve Morabito to emerge from this new generation.

I have known Steve for years and we both agree that tackling the opioid crisis statewide must be controlled with preventive education, cracking down on the overprescribing of powerful prescription drugs and making sure mental health care is easily accessible for addicts. We also agree that we must properly support our public schools to ensure a brighter future for our state and the children who trust us to provide them the best education so that they may succeed in the 21st century.  

Steve's perspective on how we must be the number one state in providing support to our Veterans as well as his progressive approach on increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour, fair wage equality, affordable housing, and his great interest in our senior citizens and his opposition to increasing fares on the MBTA makes him the ideal candidate for the Senate Seat.

Party leaders endorse Laura Rigas for Republican State Committee for Suffolk and Middlesex District

REVERE — Today, Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr endorsed Laura Rigas for Republican State Committee for the First Suffolk and Middlesex District. The district includes Revere, Winthrop, East Cambridge, as well as Boston's Beacon Hill, Chinatown, North End, and East Boston.

Rigas has already been endorsed by Governor Charlie Baker, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, and Revere City Councillor Anthony Zambuto.

Bruce E. Tarr is the minority leader of the Massachusetts Senate. He has been a member of the Senate since 1995, representing the 1st Essex and Middlesex District. He is a member of the United States Republican Party and a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Laura Rigas, who lives and works in the district, is the Communications Director for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Education in Boston. Prior to this, she worked as Vice President for Strategic Communications at Wise Public Affairs and National Communications Director for the American Conservative Union in Washington, D.C., which hosts the largest political gathering of conservatives in the nation, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). 

She served in several appointed leadership positions in the administration of President George W. Bush, at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Justice, and at the White House. She earned a Masters of Public Administration at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Arts at the College of William & Mary, where she was student body president and the first student member of the Board of Visitors.

She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Boston. She has assisted in numerous statewide and local Republican campaigns in Massachusetts and is an instructor at the Leadership Institute, where she helped found its first grassroots and campaign training for women by women. She and her husband, Michael J. Rigas, live in Revere.

Chinese-American Women Officials Endorse Diana Hwang: Hail Her Leadership on Mentoring Young Asian Women

(Boston, MA 2/16/2016) – Former Fitchburg Mayor Lisa Wong (Wong Sou Fun), Quincy City Councilor Nina Liang and Newton City Councilor Amy Mah Sangiolo (Mah Hwei Mei) have all endorsed Diana Hwang for State Senate, citing her work as a mentor for young Asian women across Massachusetts.

“The significant needs of young Asian-American women were largely neglected until Diana Hwang’s ground-breaking organization, Asian American Women’s Political Initiative (AAWPI), began to reach out to them and awaken their interest in public service and political power,” said City Councilor Amy Mah Sangiolo.  “I have witnessed first-hand the power of Diana’s leadership to make a difference in these girls’ future.  As the longest serving Asian American in the state, I would be thrilled to see Diana elected to the State House.”  Amy Mah Sangiolo has served Ward 4, City of Newton since 1997, and was the first Asian-American elected to the Newton City Council.

Founded in 2009, the Asian-American Women's Political Initiative (AAWPI) is the nation’s first and only leadership organization for Asian-American women. The organization grew out of Diana’s direct experience of being the only Asian in the State House – and the recognition that those numbers would not increase unless the role of politics – and the power of government were better understood by the next generation of young women leaders.  Over the last 6 years, under Diana’s tutelage, more than three dozen young women completed a one-of-a-kind State House fellowship and mentoring program and most have gone on to work on campaigns, in legislative offices and actively participate in their communities.

Quincy City Councilor Nina Liang, the first Asian-American woman to serve on the Quincy City Council also cited Diana’s work for AAWPI in her endorsement.

“I had the privilege to attend one of AAWPI’s graduations and see the transformative difference that Diana Hwang had made in these young girls’ lives,” said Nina Liang.  “I encounter, in my own community, Asian youth who serve as their families’ only link to the outside world and yet feel intimidated by the power of the State House and the larger political community to affect change.  Diana and her organization made a difference to that with her leadership and passion, and she would bring the same commitment to changing the system from inside the building when she is elected to the State Senate.”

Lisa Wong, the former mayor of Fitchburg Massachusetts, was the first Asian-American Mayor in Massachusetts history. “Diana Hwang is a true trailblazer who has the proven ability to organize, lead and most importantly to listen to the needs of the community,” Mayor Wong shared.  “Diana has spent her entire career fighting for women, immigrants and working families.  As State Senator, she would fight fearlessly for the needs of the district as she has for the needs of the Asian girls she has mentored.”
 
Mayor Wong, Councilor Liang and Alderwoman Mah Sangiolo join a growing list of endorsements for Diana Hwang’s State Senate Campaign.  In previous weeks Diana has been endorsed by Boston State Representative Dan Hunt and the only two minority women in the State Senate, Senators Sonia Chang-Diaz and Linda Dorcena Forry.

The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Diana Hwang previously served as a legislative aide in the State House and a Chief of Staff in the Boston City Council.  Diana serves as Board member of the UMass Center for Women in Politics, served as co-chair of the Boston Women’s Fund and is a founding member of Mayor Walsh’s Women’s Commission.  Diana currently lives in East Boston and previously lived in Revere.

The reception was held at the Rosaria Steakhouse and Function Facility in Saugus.

Mr. Basile has served as the Corporate Secretary of Meridian Bancorp, Inc. (formerly, Meridian Interstate Bancorp, Inc.) and has been a Corporator of Meridian Financial Services, Inc. since 1977. Throughout his career, he was a self-employed Management Consultant, a Clerk of Meridian Financial Services and held the position as a Regional Administrator in the Massachusetts Office of the Commissioner of Probation. In addition to his career contributions, he proudly served his country as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Feb. 27: East Boston Democrats to elect delegates to state convention

(East Boston, January 22, 2016) Registered Democrats in East Boston will be holding a caucus at the Mario Umana Academy on February 27, 2016 at 10:00am to elect eighteen (18) delegates and three (3) alternates to the 2016 Massachusetts Democratic Convention, where Democrats from across Massachusetts will gather to adopt a new Action Agenda.

The Convention will be held on Saturday, June 4th at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell.

“This is going to be an exciting year as we Massachusetts Democrats work on the presidential election, both here in Massachusetts and across the country,” commented Democratic National Committee Woman, Kate Donaghue. “In addition to the normal proceedings, the June convention is going to focus on training in party building, electoral techniques and issue-based organizing.”

The caucus is open to all registered Democrats in East Boston, and the Democratic Committee welcomes participants. Delegates will be divided equally between men and women, and all ballots will be written and secret.

In the spirit of inclusion, youth, minorities, and people with disabilities who are not elected as delegates or alternates may apply to be “add-on” delegates.

Advocate and former State House staffer has already raised $50,000 in race to replace Petruccelli

Boston, MA -- Diana Hwang, a resident of East Boston, founder of the Asian-American Women’s Political Initiative, and former State House staffer, announced her candidacy to replace Anthony Petruccelli in the Democratic primary special election for Massachusetts’ First Suffolk and Middlesex State Senate District.

“I’m running for State Senate because a district as diverse as ours needs someone who understands its needs and fights for every community and constituency,” said Hwang.  “As the daughter of immigrants, my story is the story of this district. I’ve  worked for my entire career within the system to change the system and I know first-hand the power government has to improve our lives.”

Ileana Cintron, an East Boston activist and member of the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee, has endorsed Diana Hwang in this race.

"I'm excited and honored to support Diana’s campaign and lifelong mission of increasing access to government and giving voice to those who don't feel heard or represented,” said Cintron, “Diana has built relationships and has the know-how and political savvy to solve problems and get things done.  She will make a strong Senator and bring a new energy and voice for the people of this district.”

Diana also announced today that her campaign raised over $50,000 in the last two weeks of 2015, an unusually strong showing for a first-time candidate.

“Diana is one of our  brightest and most committed young progressive leaders. She has almost 10 years’ experience advocating for women, immigrants, and working families and has done so across three very different sectors: state government, city government, and non-profits. And Diana has already shown her commitment to running a strong campaign by raising more than $50,000 during the last two weeks of December. She will have the resources needed to win an incredibly short special election,” said Former Massachusetts State Treasurer Steve Grossman, who will serve on Hwang’s finance committee.

Diana began her career as the sole staff member to the late State Representative Debbie Blumer where she drafted and guided key legislative proposals on immigrants’ rights and affordable health care. After Rep. Blumer’s untimely death, Diana served as Executive Director for the Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators, where she promoted legislation on critical issues to women and families such as healthcare, domestic violence and public education.

In 2008, seeing the lack of opportunities for Asian-American women in politics, Diana created the Asian-American Women’s Political Initiative (AAWPI). It was the country’s first leadership initiative specifically focused on getting Asian-American women into politics. Over the last 6 years, nearly 50 young women completed a State House fellowship and mentoring program. Most have gone on to work on political campaigns, in legislative offices, or in other politically active roles.

The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Diana Hwang has also previously served as chief-of-staff to an At-Large Boston City Councilor.  Outside of work, Diana has been a leading advocate for women in Massachusetts, serving as Board member of the Center for Women in Politics (UMass); as co-chair of the Boston Women’s Fund; and as a founding commissioner for Mayor Marty Walsh’s Women’s Commission.  Diana currently lives in East Boston’s Orient Heights neighborhood and previously lived in Revere.

State Senator Anthony Petruccelli announced last month that he would be leaving the State Senate to take a new job, setting up a special election on May 10.  The Democratic primary will be held on Tuesday April 12.  Massachusetts’ First Suffolk and Middlesex state senate district includes Revere, Winthrop and parts of Cambridge and Boston, including East Boston, Beacon Hill, North End, Chinatown, Bay Village, West End and Waterfront.

St. Francis House and Mayor Marty Walsh Welcome Hundreds of Poor and Homeless to Thanksgiving Dinner

BOSTON, November 26, 2015 –St. Francis House hosted its XX Annual Thanksgiving Day luncheon meal with support from Boston Bruins Matt Beleskey and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. More than 350 of Boston’s poor and homeless guests enjoyed their meals “restaurant style” with the assistance of more than 45 volunteers.

Boston Bruins Left Wing Matt Beleskey continued the Bruins Annual Thanksgiving Pie Delivery, visiting to deliver over 50 donated Mike’s Pastry pies for the Thanksgiving meal, and assisted in pre-slicing several pies.

Mayor Marty Walsh visited St. Francis House, met with guests and volunteers and assisted in carving turkeys. The Mayor’s annual visit has long been a special highlight for St Francis House guests.

"Thanks to local organizations like St. Francis House, many residents of Boston will receive a Thanksgiving dinner surrounded by family and members of the community," said Mayor Walsh. "When we work together to spread goodwill and service throughout our city, we are making a difference in the lives of others. I thank all the staff members, participants and volunteers at St. Francis House for going above and beyond to lend a helping hand to those in need and ensure that every person in Boston has a happy Thanksgiving."

“I volunteer because it's the way I was raised. My parents volunteered a lot and I guess it rubbed off on me. Plus I am blessed with having time in my life to help others in need.” said volunteer Chris Hobein of East Boston. “Most of my immediate family lives halfway across the country and I work every day this week except Thanksgiving. I couldn't get home to see family so this is a great way to spend Thanksgiving. My family knows that volunteering is an important part of my life so they love to hear that I'll be at St. Francis House on Thanksgiving.”

Letter: Gove Street Citizens Association a long established group

Long time East Boston activist Mary Ellen Welch defends the Gove Street Citizens Association in a letter to the editor.

The GSCA is a strong neighborhood group. 

This letter is sent to correct misinformation in an article in the last issue about the Gove Street Citizens Association.  The article describes the Association as “a sort of splinter group of the Jeffries Pont Neighborhood Association.” This is not true.

The Gove Street Citizens Association operated for 35 years as a strong, effective neighborhood group representing the Mount Carmel area.  The GSCA worked very hard on many issues over the years. It organized residents about the issue of a third harbor tunnel when the route was along the railroad right of way and then at the foot of Jeffries Point through the Jeffries cove. Working with the Jeffries Point Neighborhood Association the groups lobbied the Governor and other state officials to have the tunnel surface on the airport.

The Gove Street Association worked for many years   on airport impact issues like noise and air pollution. The group lobbied at City Hall and at the State House to get the airport to implement noise abatement techniques and soundproofing of homes and schools.  All the while the GSCA worked together with other neighborhood groups making the neighborhood voice a stronger one.

Both of these neighborhood groups worked with the City to improve the zoning rules in this end of East Boston.  The idea was to control institutional expansion and allow the kind of development that would enhance the residential quality of the neighborhood. Both areas had historic overlay districts designated in parts of their areas to preserve some of the unique history of the sub neighborhoods.

During the 35 year operation of the GSCA many other ideas and issues were brought up for discussion and action. The Mount Carmel area was very strong and organized around neighborhood issues. They were recognized by all levels of government and earned the respect of all the elected officials and government agencies.

When the City was forced to close the police station and a firehouse because of severe budget cuts the East Boston citizens rallied at the tunnel for 61 days to protest the closings. The GSCA was one of the neighborhood groups to recruit volunteers to march in the protest. To have an active citizen organization to watch over a section of a neighborhood makes the whole neighborhood a stronger one. There is more information able to be circulated among the neighbors on small and large issues. 

An informed citizen is an empowered one.

After 35 years the leadership of the GSCA decided to slow down and work within other organizations to do community work. In recent months with so many new development proposals surfacing in the neighborhood it became evident that more work and citizen involvement was necessary to protect the integrity of the neighborhood. So the old leadership and the newer neighborhood residents decided to revive the GSCA as a mechanism through their voices could be heard on important issues, so, the Association reintroduced themselves to the local and State officials and to developers in the neighborhood.  Of course the intention is to work with all the other neighborhood groups on issues that affect all sections of neighborhood.  Particular attention is to be paid to the local issues in the Mount Carmel area so each voice is heard and opinions are heard and respected by all who want to do business in the area.

The community is made stronger and more effective with more people and opinions involved in decision making for their immediate neighborhood. So, the GSCA is a healthy, invigorated group of residents who only want the best for their neighborhood.
Perhaps the newspaper could reach out to the leadership and membership of the GSNA to better understand the philosophy and ideas of this strong neighborhood group with a proud history.

Justin Pasquariello,East Boston Resident Named One of Ten ‘Outstanding Young Leaders’ by Boston Chamber of Commerce

(BOSTON - October 30) Justin Pasquariello, executive director of Children’s HealthWatch, was honored last night as one of the Boston Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 Ten Outstanding Young Leaders (TOYL) at the Westin Waterfront Hotel. Pasquariello and the other young leaders were nominated by members of the community and selected by a committee of Chamber members for their talent and various contributions to the region. Children’s HealthWatch, founded at Boston Medical Center, is a nonpartisan network of pediatricians, public health researchers, and children’s health and policy experts committed to improving children’s health in America.

Pasquariello also is the founding executive director of Silver Lining Mentoring and currently serves on the organization’s board. In addition, he serves on the advisory board of the Taubman Center for State and Local Government at the Harvard Kennedy School, and previously worked as a nonprofit consultant with the Bridgespan Group.

Past recipients of the Chamber’s TOYL Award include President John F. Kennedy, conductor Leonard Bernstein, business leader Jack Connors, Jr., and community advocate Carol Fulp.
