Maverick Marketplace Receives Prestigious Award From Boston Preservation Alliance

EAST BOSTON - The 2014 Boston Preservation Alliance Awards have been announced. Among the 10 high profile, big budget projects that received the award year is an unusual entry from a local husband and wife team using their own funds and labor.   

The owners of Maverick Marketplace (the former East Boston Welfare Building at 154 Maverick Street), John and Melissa Tyler, are proud today that their renovation this building has been recognized by the BPA.

The competition was fierce. According to the BPA this years entries were "our strongest group of nominations in the Award's twenty-six year history". The Alliance selected winners based on their "outstanding contributions to preservation and the character of Boston's built environment".

"Recognition of the hard work of our team that completed this two-year renovation is important to us" said John Tyler. "I am really proud of my wife, Melissa who was not only the vision and driving force of this project but also the General Contractor in charge of the day-to-day work on the building".

"The award is really a great accomplishment for our neighborhood project", said Melissa Tyler. "But what really makes us proud is the 17 new businesses that call the building home. They are generating jobs and wealth for their families on a corner of Maverick square that had been abandoned and empty for 24 years".

In a joint statement John and Melissa Tyler said "We wish to thank the City of Boston's Department of Neighborhood Development, and First Priority Credit Union whose faith in us enabled this project to go ahead and allow us to show that small, local developers can invest in their communities and produce huge results.  We would like to thank our elected officials who helped support this project from the initial Request For Proposal, to zoning and permitting and to occupancy permit. Most of all we would like to thank the community of East Boston that visit the building and do business within it."

Other winners this year include Liberty Mutual's headquarters in Back Bay, the LogMein Headquarters in Fort Point Channel and the North Bennet Street School in the North End.

Previous years winners include the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stuart Gardener Museum extension and the new Spaulding rehabilitation hospital facility in Charlestown. Previous winners from East Boston include the Sumner Street Firehouse that houses Zumix and the Barnes School at 127 Marion Street.

On the first floor retail level, the Maverick Marketplace building houses:

Citing successes, Diane Modica says farewell to EB chamber presidency

Dear Friends:

I will be completing my term as the 2012-13 President of the East Boston Chamber of Commerce at the end of January 2014. I have had the pleasure of serving on the board for nine (9) years and as its President for the past two (2) years.  During that time, I believe we have all done our best to position the Chamber as a worthy advocate and representative for our East Boston businesses and community.  

I will be succeeded by my able and energetic colleague Scott Heigelmann of Heavy Advertising who also lives and owns a business in Eastie. Scott is a great guy and he will bring a new energy to our Board and the organization. 

I hope you can attend our 2014 installation dinner on Thursday January 30th to wish Scott well along with the other incoming and remaining officers and directors, as we start off the 2014 New Year with great expectations!!

The elections will take place at the Chamber offices at 175 McClellan Highway Suite 1, on Thursday, December 15, 2011 from 11:30am-2:00pm and also 4:30pm-5:30pm. (Candidates for Officers and Directors are typically present at this time.) 

All East Boston Chamber of Commerce members in good standing as of November 15, 2011, are eligible to vote. Good standing requires that members be current on their membership dues. Each member business of the Chamber is allowed one vote; however, Chamber by laws stipulate that any member who joined the Chamber after August 31 of the current year shall not be entitled to vote in this election; voting by multiple representatives of the same business is not allowed. 

Proxy voting and absentee voting are not allowed. 

All voting results will be counted and reported after 5:30 pm on Thursday, December 15, 2011, at the Chamber office; results will then be made available on the Chamber website and by phone call request as well.

A nominations committee is selected each year and is responsible for identifying candidates for the board of directors. This year, several members of the Chamber were recognized by the committee and invited as candidates, including: Citizen’s Bank, Meridian Insurance, First Priority, Cordano Real Estate, East Boston Community Development Corporation (CDC), Neighborhood of Affordable Housing (NOAH) , and  Piers Park Sailing Center.  As of the response deadline, November 10, four of these members, Michael Sulprizio of East Boston CDC Board of Directors, Robert Martin of the Piers Park Sailing Center, Pedro Cordano of Cordano Real Estate and  Phil Giffee of NOAH,  replied that they were able to accept candidacy for board service at this time.

Any other eligible candidates seeking to run for the four open Board positions are invited to run through the process for independent nomination outlined below. According to the by-laws of the East Boston Chamber of Commerce, any member of the Corporation that has been in good standing for a minimum of one year as of January 2010 may run for office by Independent Nomination. To be placed on the ballot for Director, independent nominees must obtain the signatures of at least ten (10) members of the corporation and forward them to the Chamber Secretary, Joanna Cataldo, East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, 175 McClellan Highway, no less than 10 days prior to the day of elections on December 15, 2011.

Independent nominees for any of the Officer positions must meet the above requirements as well as have been a member of the Board of Directors for at least two of the previous five years.

Chamber Works With Boston Transportation to Address Concerns of Businesses

The East Boston Chamber of Commerce first informed City Councilor Sal LaMattina, Chairperson of the Council?s Transportation Committee, in mid-2008 of the large volume of neighborhood parking issues being logged by the Chamber from local business owners. Working with Councilor LaMattina and Boston Transportation Department (BTD) Commissioner Thomas Tinlin, the Chamber hosted a forum in early 2009 at Maverick Landing, where business owners shared their stories and expressed their concerns.

Two months ago, the Chamber invited Commissioner Tinlin to take part in a walking tour of the neighborhood?s business districts; he welcomed the opportunity. Several BTD representatives led by Commissioner Tinlin, along with Chamber President Angelo Vigliotta, Jr., Chamber director John Dudley, East Boston Main Street director Clark Moulaison, and Janet Knott from the Office of Councilor LaMattina, took to each of the four major East Boston business districts ? Central, Day, Maverick, and Orient Heights Squares.

The group made stops at several merchants in each square and took notes. Several issues were identified by the Chamber: these issues have been already, or are in the process of, being addressed by BTD. Included in this list were: a problematic, dangerous intersection at the corner of Bremen and Maverick Streets, which had no stop signs, unclear parking signage, and potential for increased customer parking; a lack of two-hour visitor limits along Meridian Street, to turn over parking for merchants? customers; faded commercial signage in Day Square; and need for increased parking enforcement in sections of Central Square and Orient Heights. ?The Chamber would like to thank Commissioner Tinlin and Councilor LaMattina for their time and concern for our business community.

They are helping us create a setting that will make it easier for our members and other businesses to operate and satisfy customers," said Chamber President Angelo Vigliotta, Jr. "We will continue to work closely with them moving forward," he added.
