EAST BOSTON, MA- On Sunday, January 14th, FMC Ice Sports will be hosting a special Decade Public Skate event at Porrazzo Rink in East Boston, MA. Come to the rink in your grooviest outfit and celebrate our favorite decades for a chance to win prizes and giveaways. The time for the themed skate is listed below:

News Advisory: Boston’s “CityKids Skate Jam” this Saturday (4/22)

What: CityKids, the community service initiative for Boston youth and children sponsored by City Realty, joins up with Orchard Skate Shop to host a non-competitive skateboard event for youths of all ages.

When: Saturday, April 22  from 1 to 3 p.m.

Where: East Boston Skate Park, Umana Academy, 312 Border Street, Boston

Summary:

Some of the city’s finest skateboarders will swap turns with kids who are “just learning” on a five-obstacle course at the CityKids Skate Jam this Saturday at Umana Academy’s Skate Park.

Contests, raffles and refreshments will be made available to participants. The event is free to skateboarders and spectators.

The first-time event is sponsored by City Realty, Orchard Skate Shop, New Balance, and Boston’s Neighborhood of Affordable Housing.

Local author and historian, Anthony M. Sammarco presents a fascinating look at many well known institutions that failed to stand the test of time, and were either demolished, lost to fire or neglect.  

Based on his book, Lost Boston, this presentation takes a look at both neighborhood and downtown institutions including The Boston Garden, City Point Aquarium, Jordan Marsh Department Store, Scollay, Haymarket and Pemberton Squares, as well as East Boston Airport and the Penny Ferry.

Festival Italia set for August 22 and August 23 in Wakefield

(WAKEFIELD, MA, July 30, 2014) Festival Italia, a two-day community-wide event, will be held on Friday evening August 22 and Saturday afternoon August 23, 2014. 

Friday, August 22nd 6:00 pm at the Sheraton Colonial North Hotel located on Audubon Road in Wakefield: You will experience an evening of fine cuisine provided by top area restaurants along with a cash bar, dessert table, music, dancing, raffles and a door prize.  This is 21+ event, and tickets can be purchased at the Wakefield Daily Item (Mon – Fri) and Smith’s Drug (Mon – Sat).  This event was sold out last year.

Stir a memory, a food memory that is!

EAST BOSTON: When did you devour your first pupusa? Whether it was last week or on your third birthday, the leaders of the Community Food Workshop Series want to know. Following up last month’s successful “Power of Local” workshop, this month’s theme will turn towards how food affects our emotion and health.

The “Stir a Memory” workshop, happening Thursday, April 7 at the Harborside Adult Education Center, will include a “food memory postcard” making activity and a healthy pupusa cooking demonstration – and of course, lots of pupusa eating!
Held on the first Thursday night of each month at Harborside Adult Education Center, the Community Food Workshop Series are an opportunity for discussion about food system issues relating directly to East Boston and will provide opportunities for participants to get involved in urban gardening and public health initiatives. Future topics include “Food Justice 101”, and “Container Gardening”.

Led by community members, the workshops are open to all and promise to be an engaging mix of hands-on education and fun! Stir a Memory will engage participants in artistically expressing a favorite food-related memory and explore the cultural link between food and good health. “Food is such an important part of community, and East Boston is no exception,” said Cait Van Damm, co-coordinator of the Community Food Workshop Series. “We hope these events will be allow us all to come together, be inspired and learn something new – and yummy!”

The series is sponsored by Healthy on the Block/Saludable en tu T tienda, an East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and Boston Public Health Commission initiative to increase access to fresh produce and whole grains in corner stores. Food and Fitness Fun: EBNHC Kicks off East Boston Bike Week with the First Annual Bike to the Farmers Market Event

East Boston, September 13, 2010—Cyclists and locavores, rejoice! The East Boston Farmers Market’s first annual Bike to the Farmers Market is bridging the worlds of local food and active transport in this unique event to take place on the afternoon of Thursday, September 16th.

The farmers market, sponsored by the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center’s Let’s Get Movin’ program, runs from 3:00 to 6:30pm and will feature special bicycle-friendly activities this week. 

Kathy Field, Director of Let’s Get Movin,’ sees this event as a way to highlight the many sides of being healthy and to empower even more East Bostonians to eat well and keep moving.  “This is a great opportunity to get the community involved in the development of a healthier lifestyle through staying physically active and eating healthy,” she says.  “These messages are exactly what Let’s Get Movin’ promotes.”

At the market this Thursday, the Boston Cyclists Union (BCU) will be providing free bike tune-ups and repairs in their third visit to the market this season, and the Boston Public Health Commission and EBNHC are sponsoring a helmet giveaway. Chef Kirk Conrad from Project Bread and the Umana Middle School Academy will also be at the market sampling some of the tasty homemade dishes that he prepares for the East Boston public middle school students.

To add to the festivities, there will be a group bike ride to the market, which will leave from the East Boston YMCA at 4pm (Note: this time has changed; the ride was previously advertised with a 3pm start time). Those who do not own a bicycle may rent one free of charge from Boston Bikes, who will be stationed at the YMCA starting at 3:30. Helmets will be included in the rental. The ride will head down the East Boston Greenway, turn up Sumner Street to Border Street, and will end at the farmers market. There will be a bike corral at the market so that cyclists have a safe place to leave their bikes while they shop.

Everyone who arrives at the market on bike will receive a free $5.00 coupon towards any farmers market items to be purchased that day. In addition, each bicyclist will receive a sticker, which can be presented at participating local restaurants for a discount during “East Boston Bike Week,” a week of restaurant discounts for bicycle riders. East Boston Bike Week runs from Friday, September 17th to Thursday, September 23rd. Participating restaurants include 303 Café, Café Gigú, El Jardín, Meridian Market, Montecristo, Rosticería Cancún, and Sonny Noto’s.

East Boston Main Streets Announces Historic Walking Tour

On Saturday September 25, 2010 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, East Boston Main Streets and the Boston Preservation Alliance will host an interactive walking tour of Maverick and Central Squares with Support from Historic Boston Incorporated and the National Trust for Historic preservation.

Participants will share stories of how East Bostonians have built, worked and played in, preserved and given new life to the neighborhood’s special buildings and places – from the 9 Chelsea Street Sidewalk Clock to the Piers, from Engine 40 Firehouse to the Barnes School. This project is one part of an exciting new historic preservation outreach initiative in Allston and other parts of the city: the Neighborhood Preservation Partnership of Boston. With funding and support from the National Trust for Historic Preservation Partners in the Field Program, two local historic preservation organizations, Historic Boston Incorporated and the Boston Preservation Alliance, are using this initiative to extend historic preservation field services to Boston neighborhoods through workshops, priority planning and one-on-one assistance to property owners, residents, Boston Main Street districts, and community-based organizations.
