Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey: Help Us Reach Our Goal:

Today’s Top 10: Annual MEB 10K Raffle

As we watch our teams wrap up regular season play in preparation for playoffs (yeah, baby!), we are reminded that the foundation of our league continues to be our youngest players – like those pictured here in the Learn-to-Skate program.  These kids are the reason for many of our biggest fundraising activities, and why the feature of this week’s update is on our big event this Friday – the Annual 10K raffle.

Are you busy this Friday night, March 27, 2015? No, have we got a deal for you!!! Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey (MEB) is holding its largest annual fundraiser – the $10K Raffle and Dinner. For the past several years, this event has provided the league with funding greatly needed to finish off the season and prepare for next season. With ice rental fees continually increasing, we have used this event to help pay-off rinks and other fees owed at the end of our season. Admit it, you are thinking, “Why should I get involved in another fundraising event?" Here are 10 reasons (think of the David Letterman show as you read these aloud):

Top 10 reasons for buying a ticket for the Malden East Boston Youth Hockey (MEB) 10K raffle:

10.  You or a friend or family member have or have had kids in youth hockey in the last 10 years (so you know how expensive ice time is!)

9.  You are or have a friend or family member are from or live in East Boston or Malden (or have in the last 10 years)

8.  MEB has kept their annual tuition price virtually the same (or lowered it!) for players for the past 7 years through fundraising efforts like this

7.  You operate a business in Malden or East Boston, or one of several other surrounding communities, and enjoy supporting youth sports programs with a tax deductible donation

6.  The MEB 10K is an “elimination-style” raffle, where half of the fun is watching as your co-investors are “knocked out” of the running for the big prize

5.  You are a current MEB youth hockey parent and have at least three other friends to defray the cost of another chance at the jackpot

4.  MEB is an example of a great merger of two town teams, with drive and competitiveness resulting in multiple tournament and league championships over the past 7 years

3.  Your child is one of the 30+ current and former MEB players who for the 2014-15 school year were accepted onto their high school hockey programs

2.  The math is simple: 4 friends + you = 20 bucks a head for a ticket; heck, make it 9 friends (come on, you have more than 4, right?) and it’s only 10 bucks each for a chance at a share of TEN GRAND

1.  What else are you going to do this Friday night – KARAOKE? This is way more fun than embarrassing yourselves in front of your friends – err, scratch that – it’s about the same, but for a much better cause than your weekend-warrior, artificially induced delusions of fame and that crazy dream of making it on THE VOICE!

The details (our lawyer appreciates us including these):

The fundraising part is an “elimination raffle” drawing for $10,000*, whose tickets cost $100 each, and include dinner for two at the event, which takes place from 7:00 PM to midnight this Friday, March 27, at the Loyal Order of Moose Club, Broadway, Malden. A buffet dinner is served and families donate desserts, there are additional chances for winning baskets from each of the teams in the league, other donated goods and services, and a great silent auction of sports memorabilia is available as well. We'll have a DJ, and several participants will likely resort to dancing either as a result of their tickets being eliminated from the remaining eligible or just from the contagious fun all are having at the event.

Really, the event is truly quite fun, especially if you like watching people enjoy themselves while witnessing each other’s chances of winning wash away as the evening wears on – a bit of schadenfreude among the youth hockey parents. Remember, this is a chance at winning a few thousand bucks! That of course depends on your luck and the choices of some “finalists” in the process. Let me explain – this is an opportunity to enter an elimination-style raffle, where the total number of tickets sold generates the dollar amount available for winning. In this case, the tickets cost $100 each, and the goal is to sell 200 of them, so that the organization generates $10,000 and the winner receives $10,000 (or is split among winners). In the case of fewer tickets sold, the pot is slightly smaller, but the concept remains the same.

However it turns out, all who attend have fun, and all who buy a ticket start out with a chance at the final prize. This is a great opportunity to support one of our growing sports organizations, and a chance at winning. If you find you are not interested in buying a ticket individually, the concept of four friends pitching in $25 each works very well. Also, we see a lot of “group” tickets, which can work with your colleagues at work, friends in your circle, or among family members to spread the investment across a few more people. If you know of others who may be interested, please feel free to pass this information along.

One raffle ticket includes dinner admission for two, but you do not need to attend the event to win. You can choose to have a representative at the event if you cannot attend in person. If you are interested in either a single ticket or a group ticket, please contact us ASAP, as the event is this week, and we are stretching to reach our goal.

Ticket forms are available from one of our coaches or Board members, or on our website at http://www.mebhockey.com/Fundraising_Events.html

Thank you for your consideration, and if you choose to participate – good luck! If you attend, it really can be quite an entertaining evening and a great way to keep these little ones on the ice for a few more years.

* The total amount available for the winners is determined by the total number of tickets sold, and is a maximum of $10,000 (our goal).

Malden/East Boston Mites outplay Dorchester, winning 4-2 and Mayor's Cup

Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey Update

With two teams in the 2014 Boston Mayor’s Cup tournament on Sunday, January 4, Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey (MEB) was busy preparing after the holiday.  Our Pee Wee team played a tough-fought shootout with Dorchester, falling 2-1 in a classic goalie’s duel.  The MEB Mites were victorious earlier in the day, also playing Dorchester, winning 4-2.  Both games were played “on the big ice” at Boston College.  Congratulations to the Mites for the Championship win and to all teams who participated!

In regular games this past weekend, we saw a variety of games played and a lot of success from the MEB squads.  Beginning on Friday night at the Valley Forum Rink in Haverhill, the Bantam team took a 4-1 victory over Concord.  They continue to push ahead, playing around the middle of the division in standings.

Our youngest competitors on the Mite B team suffered a tough 2-11 loss to S&S in Revere, in the only game we had on the calendar for MEB on Saturday this weekend.  On Sunday, three other teams played, each scoring a ‘W’ in those contests.

Starting with the Mite A team on Sunday morning at the Malden Valley Forum, we won 8-2 against Melrose.  Another morning game was played in at the Devine Rink in Dorchester featuring the MEB Squirts versus Needham, with MEB coming out on top 4-2.  The Squirts are playing ion a new division with new results and a positive outlook for the rest of the season.  Finally, the Pee Wees played to a 4-2 win over NH East at the Valley Forum in Haverhill.  Fighting for top spot in their division, they continue to have fun and compete at a high level.

East Boston Malden Youth Hockey Weekly Round Up #11

As 2013 comes to a close we want to thank all of our players, families, and fans who made this year so great. 2014 will be even better! Don’t forget the new session of our Learn-to-Skate and Play Hockey classes begin on January 12th. See our website for details.

SQUIRT (9-10 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 2, Needham 3
Simoni Rink, Cambridge

PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 3, Waltham 3
Ice Palace, Burlington

In a weird one which included an already short bench losing two players mid game due to the flu, the M.E.B. Mustangs skated to a tie. Waltham got up early on the Mustangs despite the aggressive play from M.E.B. The penalty box door may need new hinges at the Ice Palace after the Mustangs played short-handed for most of the first two periods. At the end of 2 it was Waltham up by three goals. The M.E.B. Peewees found their stride half way through the third when Marc Giordano found the back of the net to make it 1-3. A deflected puck minutes later in front of the Waltham net touched not only the stick of Giordano but Sean Noonan and Ryan Gray to bring the Mustangs within 1. Gray wasn’t finished yet as he lit the lamp with 3:00 remaining in the 3rd and that’s how it ended, tied 3-3.

BANTAM AA (13-14 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 2, Nashoba 6
Valley Rink, Haverhill MA

M.E.B. traveled North to take on Nashoba. The Mustangs got on the board first with a goal by Ryan Tosto.  Nashoba responded quickly by scoring three unanswered goals. The first period ended with Nashoba leading 3-1. The second period started off with Michael Giordano crossing the blueline into the Nashoba zone and beating the Nashoba goaltender with a beautiful wrist shot high on the stick side, cutting the deficit to one.  Nashoba responded once again by scoring two goals in the second period and increasing its lead to 5-2 after 2. Nashoba added another goal in the 3rd period for a final score of 6-2.

Malden/East Boston 2, Concord, NH 5
Valley Rink, Haverhill MA

The Mustangs were once again in Haverhill to take on Concord, NH. M.E.B. got on the board first with a goal by Michael Giordano off of a beautiful feed from Curtis Taddeo. The 1st period ended with the Mustangs in front 1-0. Concord got on the board with a goal early in the second period to tie the game.  The Mustangs answered that goal midway through the period when Marty Taylor beat the Concord netminder after a nice drop pass from Taddeo. The 2nd period ended with the Mustangs in front by a score of 2-1. A penalty-filled third period saw Concord with the man advantage throughout most of the period. Concord capitalized on their opportunities by scoring 4 unanswered goals and taking a 5-2 victory.

BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 7, Waltham 0
Veterans Rink, Waltham MA

Malden/East Boston 2, Arlington 4
Allied Rink, Everett MA

MIDGET (15-18 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 6, Reading 2
Valley Rink, Malden MA

Week 9: East Boston Youth Hockey Wrap-up

It was another great week of M.E.B. Youth Hockey. Don’t forget the new session of our Learn-to-Skate and Play Hockey classes begin on January 12th and make a great Christmas gift. See our website for details.

Mite K (5-8 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 5, Agawam 7 Kasabuski Arena, Saugus MA Jake Simpson had a pair of goals, with Chris Cecca, Chris Hanifan, and Lukas Deguire each adding a goal apiece. Chad Robertson invoked images of the 1980 version of Jim Craig making many spectacular saves. The MVP's of this game have to be the Moms and Dads that shoveled heavy, wet snow to get the little guys to the rink.

SQUIRT (9-10 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 2, Masco 1 Kasabuski Arena, Saugus MA

BANTAM AA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 3, Lexington/Bedford 0 Valley Rink, Malden MA Thomas Guarino logged a shutout as the Bantam AA’s hold onto a piece of 1st place.

BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 5, Needham 0 Simoni Rink, Cambridge A big W Saturday night for the M.E.B. Bantam AAA's as they faced Needham. Pucks weren't bouncing M.E.B.’s way until Needham committed an infraction and put the M.E.B. boys on the man advantage. That's when Ryan Noonan opened the scoring, banging in a rebound off a Nick Miller shot. It would take a buzzer and a new period before the scoring would pick up again when Noonan introduced the puck to the upstairs of the opposing net for his second of the night. Not to be outdone, Louis Staffieri wanted to add some sound to his goal clanking it off the post and in to put M.E.B. up by three. Entering the 3rd, the boys didn't let up as Ryan Noonan and Nick Salgado demonstrated the fine art of tic-tac-toe passing, putting on a clinic through the offensive zone, moving the goalie like he was playing Dance Dance Revolution and Salgado throwing the puck into an open net, for a four point lead. With the game winding down, the gritty Mike DeFillipo worked himself another goal sneaking one in on the short side to cap off a commanding 5-0 win and another shutout for goaltender Anthony Giuliano. Malden/East Boston 4, Lynnfield/Saugus 0 Valley Rink, Malden

At the Malden Valley Forum, M.E.B. battled a strong Lynnfield/Saugus team. The 1st period showed a physical, back and forth game with few scoring chances for either team. When the 2nd period started the M.E.B. boys stepped it up with Noah Carlson unloading a wrist shot into the opposing net and put M.E.B up 1-0. Not long after Carlson once again let a shot from the point go, this time finding the stick of his twin brother Johna Carlson who tipped the shot into the net. With the period winding down, Nick Capillo finished off a Nick Salgado pass to add to the lead. The 3rd period continued to be a back and forth struggle but Anthony Giuliano was solid between the home team's pipes. Continued hard work paid off with Ryan Noonan tipping home a James Pandolfo shot, redirecting the biscuit into the short side and finalizing the game at 4-0.

If you or someone you know has a child who wants to play hockey, we have open enrollment.
