Malden/East Boston Mites Skate to Valley League Championship, March 23, 2014

(HAVERHILL VALLEY FORUM) The Malden/East Boston Mites skated to a 3-2 overtime victory over Methuen in the Valley Championship. MEB spotted Methuen the first two goals before mounting a great come from behind victory. Jake Simpson had the first two goals with an assist to John Summers. Chris Cecca sent the boys home happy with a beautiful wrist shot 2 minutes into overtime that beat the Methuen goalie and sent the MEB skaters, coaches, and family members into a frenzy. Chris Hanifan was spectacular in net making 20 saves and helped shut down Methuen for the final two periods and overtime. The tone of the game changed on a Jonathan Monge checking penalty that seemed to send a message to Methuen that MEB should not be fooled with on this day. A strong defensive effort by Will Fosdick, Cristian Monge, Ryan Thomas, and Summers kept the Methuen forwards back. The backchecking and pressure of Anthony Messina, Ryan Jones, Joe Hurley, Lukas Deguire, and Chad Robertson kept Methuen on their toes all game.  The Mites were coached by Jon Fosdick, Bill Hanifan, Joe Hurley, and Tom Robertson. – Bill Hanifan.

Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey Wrap-up Week 16

Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey Round Up for week 16 of the regular season. Don’t miss your chance to win $10,000 in the MEB 10K Raffle and Dinner, February 21st at the Malden Moose. Only 200 tickets will be sold. See www.mebhockey.com/Fundraising_Events.html for details and ticket form.

Chad Robertson played excellent between the pipes, recording 12 saves.

PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 4, North Reading 8
Ranger Rink, Methuen MA

Corey Rufo lit the lamp for the Mustangs halfway through the 1st period with a dangle that ended up top shelf.  Netminder Kevin Ivany was a victim of a goalie explosion that saw him, Bethan Taddeo and a North Reading skater all yard sale onto the ice. A split second later the loose puck was potted by North Reading and despite of the blatant interference the game was tied 1-1. North Reading game out hot in the 2nd period threading one past Ivany to make it 1-2. MEB's Rufo was on his game as he made his second goal of the afternoon look easy minutes later to tie things up. North Reading capitalized on a mismatch and scored 3 goals in 3 minutes to end the 2nd period 2-5. In the 3rd wing Joe Melanson, who had pushed the puck up ice all game, fed Rufo for his first career trick of the hat to bring MEB within 2 goals. Defenseman Jeff Melanson broke up a North Reading assault and got the penalty call prior to a North Reading goal as MEB let up at what should have been a stoppage of play. Instead North Reading shot and squeaked one through the 5 hole to make it 3-6. A confused and deflated Mustang team let off the gas and allowed North Reading to score two more. Coach Jim Taddeo mixed things up and called on defensive specialist Jake LaVerde to crash the North Reading net in the left wing slot to muscle a final goal in.

The 2nd period saw Natick score the first goal of the game but MEB came right back at them with quick unassisted goal by Mark Giordano. The final minutes of the 2nd period saw some great MEB passing and stick handling resulting in Joseph Melanson putting the puck in the back of the net, followed by a second unassisted goal for Giordano. In the 3rd period there was no goal scoring but lots of excitement as MEB went on the defensive, shorthanded for most of the 12 minutes but great goaltending by Anthony Bocchino brought home another win.

The MEB Peewees took on the Nashua Panthers. The Mustangs struck first with a great up ice pass from Ronan Valarese to John Bernbaum who lit the lamp with 8:28 left in the 1st period. The Panthers fought back to tie it minutes later. The 2nd period saw an MEB breakdown as Nashua scored two fast goals to take the lead 1-3. Goaltender Kevin Ivany showed mental strength and shook off a tough few minutes. MEB found momentum behind Marc Giordano's end to end drive that finished with the bisket in the basket. Gio wasn't done yet as he passed on a rail to Corey Rufo to tie it up going into the 3rd period. The last period saw Gio tripped up in the act of one-timing a gift from Anthony Bocchino and a penalty shot that found the back of the net to take the lead 4-3. Gio picked up another goal with an assist by Rufo followed by Joe Melanson who picked up the puck in the corner and made his own opportunity.
