Salesian Boys & Girls Club Announces Renewal of Administration

Fr. John Nazzaro, Executive Director of the Salesian Boys & Girls Club, has announced that he will be stepping down as Executive Director to hand the administration over to a new, younger, energetic Director who will continue the leadership of our Salesian Club.

Fr. John will remain as Director of Mission of the Salesian Boys & Girls Club, a position he is very excited about. He feels he will be able to impact more young people without the administrative responsibilities of Executive Director.

The Director of Mission position is a more pastoral position, ensuring the Salesian Spirit of St. John Bosco the Apostle of Youth will be present at our club for years to come.

Fr. John said when he first professed as a Salesian of St. John Bosco, he was asked what would be his dream job. Without hesitation, Fr. John said, “To work at the Salesian Boys & Girls Club.” “I want everyone to know who has been so great in supporting our kids that my new responsibilities are that dream job come true.”

The Director of Mission will collaborate with the Executive Director in overseeing faith formation, mission identity, and formation of the Salesian educational approach.

Fr. John mentioned that this is the priority in all Salesian houses throughout the Congregation. Fr. John will also help the new Executive Director in the transition.

Our Provincial Fr. Tim Zak has increased the number of Salesians from three to five because the Salesian presence is here to stay and is as alive as ever in East Boston.

The Salesian Boys & Girls Club staff has been fantastic over the years and the majority of the staff are former club kids. “Our club is entrusted to great people who I love very much,” Fr. John said. He continued to express his admiration for all the staff over the years and sees great things in the future for the Salesian Boys & Girls Club. With this new position as Director of Mission,

Fr. John will have more time to attend to the Spiritual and Educational Salesian Philosophy as well as promoting a Christian culture with the priority of a safe place for young people.

Fr. John will still be involved in promoting the club with fundraisers and development. “A lot of the donors who have been so supportive in the past are my friends and that friendship must continue to help our youth have a great future … East Boston is my home and I count my blessings every day I get up and hear the sounds of Eastie on Bennington Street.”

October 13: North Suffolk to offer Community Education Forum for Families Marijuana’s Effect on the Developing Brain

Chelsea, MA (September 22, 2016)- North Suffolk Mental Health Association, with support from the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and the East Boston Substance Abuse Coalition will be offering a Community Education Forum for parents and early teens to learn about marijuana and its effects on the developing brain at the Mario Umana Barnes Middle School on Thursday, October 13th from 4:30 to 7:30 PM.

This completely FREE event will offer dinner, translation services, childcare for children 3-10 and a presentation by Rick Cresta, a social worker from Boston University. This free event is open to everyone in the community.

This forum is in response to the recent MGH Youth Risk Behavior Survey which polled students at the East Boston High School. The survey showed a majority of students had tried marijuana, and a significant number are regular users. Rick Cresta focuses on Marijuana and Adolescent Substance Use. He doesn’t argue with those who say that marijuana causes less harm than other drugs. “That, however, does not mean it’s harmless,”

The schedule for the evening has a resource fair and dinner being served from 4:30 to 6:00 PM in the Umana cafeteria. At 6:00 pm, childcare will start while Rick presents to parents and kids above 10 in the multi-purpose room. Parents will have the opportunity to ask questions directly, and learn about how to talk with their kids about what they have learned.

Massport STEM Expo Promotes Various Transportation Careers

Students from area schools learn the practical importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

BOSTON – More than 1,500 students from 44 Greater Boston schools attended the Aviation and Maritime STEM Education Expo at Boston Logan International Airport today. The Expo is an annual education event where representatives from industry, government, and academia introduce students and educators to the opportunities and experiences offered by the aviation, maritime, and transportation fields.

“It is essential for organizations like Massport that students are exposed to careers in science, technology, engineering and math,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “Boston is home to a number of industries including life sciences, technology and innovation. We need our young people to have the interest and motivation to study the STEM disciplines so we can continue to generate the good-paying jobs and economic impact that propel the Commonwealth.”

More than 50 displays and information booths representing various aspects of the industries served as the backdrop for the event at the Delta Hangar. There were 21 aircraft including airplanes, two helicopters, numerous airport operations vehicles, as well as a Massport Fire Rescue airboat. In addition to several Massport departments, exhibitors included The Museum of Science, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Mass Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Air and Space Museum, Massachusetts State Police, Boston MedFlight and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

“Hundreds of careers at our airports were represented today,” said Massport’s Director of Aviation Ed Freni. “We rely on the engineers who design and build the planes, the pilots who fly them, the electricians who keep runways lit and radars working properly, the air traffic controllers who make sure aircraft travel safely in the sky, and many more. Showcasing the various career paths at the STEM Expo will hopefully encourage these young people to one day have a career at Logan.”

Massport employs hundreds of people in STEM fields including electricians, engineers, analysts, and technicians who work in concert to accomplish the authority’s mission of connecting Massachusetts and New England to the world. The STEM Education Expo started as a collaborative effort sponsored by the FAA and Massport in 1994.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) owns and operates Boston Logan International Airport, public terminals in the Port of Boston, Hanscom Field, and Worcester Regional Airport. Massport is a financially self-sustaining public authority whose premier transportation facilities generate more than $15 billion annually, and enhance and enable economic growth and vitality in New England. No state tax dollars are used to fund operations or capital improvements at Massport facilities. For more information please visit massport.com.

United Way expands successful summer learning program; EB YMCA and Social Centers participate

Over 3,000 K-3 students expected to benefit from literacy programs proven to avoid summer learning loss and increase reading skills

BOSTON -- United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley is expanding its nationally-recognized Summer Learning Collaborative to reach over 3,000 elementary school-age children in 25 program sites in the region. This year’s funding of $260,000 – raised from diverse partners such as Alliance Data, Boston Consulting Group, Boston Financial Data Services, Theodore Edson Parker Foundation, United Parcel Service and United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council – enables the expansion to serve over 300 more children than last year and three additional locations. The 2015 locations will serve students from the communities of Lynn, Lawrence, Lowell, Salem, Winthrop, Peabody, Revere, Cambridge, Somerville and Boston neighborhoods of Dorchester, East Boston, Allston Brighton, Chinatown and Roxbury.

Research shows that low-income children experience summer learning loss at a much higher rate than their middle-class peers, who typically benefit from enriching summer programs, learning experiences and homes filled with books and reading. Over the course of one summer vacation, this summer learning loss creates an approximate three-month achievement gap in reading skills between the two groups of children. By middle school, the cumulative effect adds up to a gap equal to two full years of achievement.

A partnership between United Way, BOSTnet, community-based organizations, and school districts, the Summer Learning Collaborative improves children’s literacy outcomes by integrating literacy activities in fun and meaningful ways into existing summer camp programs at community-based organizations in low-income communities. It also focuses on professional development for program staff to ensure the program’s success can be sustained and scaled.  Last year:

·         85% of the 2,700 participating children avoided summer learning loss;

·         82% of children said they enjoy reading more now than they did at the end of the summer;

·         69% of the participating children maintained or increased reading skills; and

·         85% of the participating children said the staff made reading fun.

“For too many children, summer time is when important progress made during the school year is lost,” said Michael K. Durkin, president at United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley.  “This partnership is specifically designed to target summer learning, helping children to maintain, and even increase, their reading skills over the summer to keep them on track to be proficient readers by third grade.”

The communities and locations for the 2015 Summer Learning Collaborative include:

Boston: Ellis Memorial, Dorchester YMCA, East Boston YMCA, Egleston YMCA, Oak Square YMCA, Wang YMCA, East Boston Social Centers

Cambridge: East End House

Lawrence: Lawrence YWCA, Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Merrimack Valley YMCA

Lowell: Girls Inc. of Lowell, Community Teamwork Inc. (at Murkland, Pawtucketville and McAuliffe schools)

Lynn: Camp Fire North Shore, Girls Inc. of Lynn, Gregg Neighborhood House

Peabody: For Kids Only Afterschool

Revere: For Kids Only Afterschool

Salem: For Kids Only Afterschool
