Declaring Revere Casino ‘Not A Done Deal’ Clergy Call for Prayer on Sunday

(REVERE, MA - February 14, 2014) Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim leaders in Revere have called upon their respective communities to gather at the sanctuary of Immaculate Conception Parish at 1 PM on Sunday, February 16, for an ecumenical prayer gathering expected to draw hundreds of Revere residents.

“This is a gathering for all people of faith who are opposed to the casino” says Tim Bogertman, Associate Pastor of First Congregational Church in Revere.  “It will be a time to pray, speak, and encourage others to stand against this disastrous casino plan that will negatively impact the lives of people living here.”

Friends of Revere (www.friendsofrevere.com) – a diverse group of pastors, priests and ministers representing various traditions, denominations and congregations in Revere – have called for Sunday’s gathering because they are deeply concerned about the impact of a casino in their community, what they describe as “a direct threat to the families and children who live in Revere.”

Pastor Nely Esturban of Betel Church in Revere says, “I want peace for the city of Revere.  Let me tell you why – I love my kids, I love my city, and I don’t want to bring about the destruction of my city.  We don’t need a casino here.”

In conversation with hundreds of congregants and parishioners, the ministers claim the casino is far from decided in the minds of people in Revere.  “I thought the casino was a done deal,” explains Father George Szal of Immaculate Conception Church, “but then I began speaking with my parishioners and more than half of them are opposed to the casino.  This is not a done deal at all.”

Members of Friends of Revere continue to lead their congregations, mosques and synagogues in what has been several weeks of prayer for positive future development in Revere, and they have also been preaching about the harmful effects that a casino will have in their neighborhood.  Rabbi Joseph Berman, a founding member of Friends of Revere, explains his opposition to the casino in straightforward terms, “Casinos prey on the most vulnerable members of our communities, and they increase poverty, addiction, and crime.”

“Sunday’s ecumenical prayer gathering at Immaculate Conception is a time to declare that God has something better for this town than a casino,” says Pastor Bogertman, “and all are welcome.”

City Hall: Schools to be closed 2/5: Snow Emergency and Parking Ban in Effect Tonight (2/4) at 11PM

Boston Public Schools Closed Tomorrow

Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced City response plans for the winter storm expected to begin early tomorrow morning. The Mayor has declared a Snow Emergency and Parking Ban for the City of Boston, in effect tonight, Tuesday, February 4, at 11:00 p.m. Boston Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, February 5. City Hall will be open for business as usual.

“Our team is ready for this storm,” Mayor Walsh said. “We’re expecting a very difficult morning commute, and for that reason we’re urging everyone to use public transportation to travel in and around the city tomorrow."

National Weather Service has declared a Winter Weather Warning in effect for the City of Boston from midnight through 6:00 p.m. Wednesday. Latest forecasts indicate the storm is expected to result in 6 to 10 inches of snow in Boston, with heaviest snow fall beginning at 6 a.m, at a rate of an inch an hour. Another significant storm is expected for this weekend, and dropping temperatures are forecast, emphasizing the importance for Public Works crews to get as close to the curb as possible in their snow clearing during tomorrow’s storm.

All Boston Centers for Youth & Families centers will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow. Children ages 7 and older are welcome, and any child under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at drop-off to fill out a short intake form.

During declared snow emergencies, discounted parking is available at several parking lots and garages to cars that display Boston resident parking stickers. Discounted parking is available starting at 9:00 p.m. tonight: http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/parkingmap.asp.

Public Works

Public Works teams will begin pre-treating roads at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Crews are prepared for the snow event, and will have more than 500 pieces of equipment active on City streets by 6 a.m.
Regularly scheduled trash and recycling collection will begin one hour early, at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Transportation

During a Snow Emergency, parking is prohibited on all major arteries in Boston. These streets are posted with “Tow Zone No Parking During Snow Emergency” signs. A listing of major arteries and alternate parking can be found at http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/parking/.
On streets other than major arteries, parking within 20 feet of an intersection or further than one foot from the curb is prohibited, as this impedes access for both emergency vehicles and snow plows.

Public Safety

Boston Police, Boston Fire, and Boston EMS will have additional staff on hand throughout the duration of storm.
Boston Police will be posted at major intersections during tomorrow’s morning and evening commute to assist with traffic flow.
The City's Emergency Operations Center has been activated and staffed with all relevant City departments.

Cold Weather Safety Reminders

Carbon Monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas that results from combustion and can quickly become fatal. Residents should clear snow and debris away from mufflers before starting the car and ensure that external vents are cleared of snow. If you are using a generator, make sure it is far enough away to vent air and gases away from the home.
To protect against forecasted cold temperatures, people should layer clothing and minimize outdoor activity.  Over a dozen people in Boston suffered injuries related to hypothermia during the last extreme cold weather snap.
The City's homeless shelters have activated emergency procedures. The City's Shelter Commission asks that any resident who sees a potential medical emergency involving a homeless person dial 9-1-1.
Property owners are required to salt and sand sidewalks, stairs and pedestrian ramps to prevent slippery surfaces.
Residents are encouraged to shovel out hydrants and catch basins near or abutting their property to assist our public safety agencies and protect against flooding.
Please check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need help.
Use caution when walking near buildings that may have falling snow or ice.
Shoveling snow can pose a serious health safety risk to persons with heart disease and senior citizens. Residents should consider seeking the assistance of a family member, a helpful neighbor or hire someone to help.
Additional cold weather safety tips can be found at: http://www.cityofboston.gov/cold/safety.asp.

The Mayor's 24-Hour Hotline will have additional staff on-hand and residents with weather-related questions or concerns, including down power lines, down trees or icy conditions, should call (617) 635-4500.

Residents are encouraged to use the City’s “Know Snow” program for access to other important storm-related information. To receive notifications, register for the City’s Alert Boston network at http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/. For updates & questions via Twitter, use @NotifyBoston, follow #bosnow.

Diamond Exchange Tickets Auction at Taste of Eastie Enables Winners to Attend Celtics Game

On January 29, Ida Candreva and her friends were able to enjoy a wonderful evening watching the Celtics play at TD Garden courtesy tickets donated to East Boston Main Streets’ Taste of Eastie live auction by Walter Yourawski, owner of the East Boston Diamond and Gold Exchange.

The experience of the evening was tremendously enhanced by a limo ride to and from the Garden, a visit to the scoreboard with Ed Palladino, and the opportunity to meet the players and the cheerleaders, all courtesy the generosity of Joe Ruggiero from the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home.

Joe, who has become somewhat of a fixture at the Taste of Eastie continued his ongoing support of East Boston’s non-profit community by serving once again as the energetic, well-loved auctioneer at the Taste – and encouraging bidding by adding all kinds of generous incentives to the process.

East Boston Main Streets would like to thank all the restaurants who participated in the Taste of Eastie, all our guests and supporters, and particularly Joe Ruggiero and Walter Yourawski.

Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey Wrap-up Week 16

Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey Round Up for week 16 of the regular season. Don’t miss your chance to win $10,000 in the MEB 10K Raffle and Dinner, February 21st at the Malden Moose. Only 200 tickets will be sold. See www.mebhockey.com/Fundraising_Events.html for details and ticket form.

MITE K (5-8 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 5, East Coast Wizards 2
Veterans Rink, Somerville MA

Jake Simpson had 2 goals in the 1st period and capped off the scoring getting the hat trick late in the third period. Will Fosdick had the game winner midway through the second period, with Chris Hanifan scored the other goal in the second period. Chad Robertson played excellent between the pipes, recording 12 saves.

PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 4, North Reading 8
Ranger Rink, Methuen MA

Corey Rufo lit the lamp for the Mustangs halfway through the 1st period with a dangle that ended up top shelf.  Netminder Kevin Ivany was a victim of a goalie explosion that saw him, Bethan Taddeo and a North Reading skater all yard sale onto the ice. A split second later the loose puck was potted by North Reading and despite of the blatant interference the game was tied 1-1. North Reading game out hot in the 2nd period threading one past Ivany to make it 1-2. MEB's Rufo was on his game as he made his second goal of the afternoon look easy minutes later to tie things up. North Reading capitalized on a mismatch and scored 3 goals in 3 minutes to end the 2nd period 2-5. In the 3rd wing Joe Melanson, who had pushed the puck up ice all game, fed Rufo for his first career trick of the hat to bring MEB within 2 goals. Defenseman Jeff Melanson broke up a North Reading assault and got the penalty call prior to a North Reading goal as MEB let up at what should have been a stoppage of play. Instead North Reading shot and squeaked one through the 5 hole to make it 3-6. A confused and deflated Mustang team let off the gas and allowed North Reading to score two more. Coach Jim Taddeo mixed things up and called on defensive specialist Jake LaVerde to crash the North Reading net in the left wing slot to muscle a final goal in.

Cronin Ice Rink, Revere MA

PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 3, Natick 1
Simoni Ice Rink, Cambridge MA

MEB came out dominant in the 1st period, hungry for another win after one-in-a-row. Rookie Guilherme Basilio managed to draw a penalty in the first minute of his first ever game. The 2nd period saw Natick score the first goal of the game but MEB came right back at them with quick unassisted goal by Mark Giordano. The final minutes of the 2nd period saw some great MEB passing and stick handling resulting in Joseph Melanson putting the puck in the back of the net, followed by a second unassisted goal for Giordano. In the 3rd period there was no goal scoring but lots of excitement as MEB went on the defensive, shorthanded for most of the 12 minutes but great goaltending by Anthony Bocchino brought home another win.

Presser at 3 pm today: EB & Revere Communities Unite On City Line to Oppose Mohegan Sun Casino at Suffolk Downs

Neighboring community groups to hold joint press conference on the Revere/Boston city line in advance of Mohegan Sun's presentation to Massachusetts Gaming Commission
BOSTON, MA (January 21, 2014) - Today Don't Gamble on Revere, a registered municipal ballot question committee organized to stop a casino at Suffolk Downs, and No Eastie Casino, will hold a joint press conference and public demonstration at 3pm on the Revere/East Boston city line to denounce the Massachusetts Gaming Commission's disregard for residents' clear "no" vote from 8,513 residents of Revere and East Boston in referendums on Nov. 5 and highlight the contents of a comment letter to be submitted to the Commission (MGC) in advance of its January 22 meeting with Mohegan Sun.

"A casino at Suffolk Downs is a casino at Suffolk Downs, and shifting this development a few feet over the city line into Revere doesn't change anything," said Matt Cameron, No Eastie Casino's volunteer legal counsel and an East Boston resident. "As anyone who is familiar with this unique site must recognize, the city of Boston is now being forced to host a guest that we have already dis-invited."

"As knowledge of traffic, pollution, crime, and numerous other social problems due to casinos come to light, Revere opposition to a casino at Suffolk Downs is growing," said Joseph Catricala, spokesperson for Don't Gamble on Revere.  "The lack of a clear host community agreement to mitigate these impacts makes us doubt that the City of Revere and Suffolk Downs truly have Revere's interests in mind.  We are very concerned a casino will bleed our community dry."

In advance of the press conference, No Eastie Casino and Don't Gamble on Revere will submit a joint letter to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission registering their disapproval of the gaming application process and noting that more time is needed for Boston's new administration to make an informed decision.

"Mohegan Sun has filed an incomplete application with missing and outdated information, and is now trying to keep critical details relating to the site plan and their proposed land use confidential. This development will forever change the character and futures of East Boston and Revere, and we deserve to see everything that has already been made available to the Gaming Commission. " Cameron said.

For details on the press conference location, please contact Joe Catricala at 781-727-6099 or Celeste Myers at 617-913-3332.

About Don't Gamble on Revere

Don't Gamble on Revere is a group of citizens concerned about the future of Revere. We know that Revere has come a long way over the years and we don't want to lose all of the progress that we have made. We are an official municipal ballot question committee opposed to the casino at Suffolk Downs and a united all-volunteer force standing against the proposed casino in Revere.

About No Eastie Casino

No Eastie Casino is a grassroots effort led by local, all-volunteer residents opposed to the casino at Suffolk Downs. Our goal is to build a strong base of East Boston residents that represents the full diversity of our community; shares a common vision for a vibrant, healthy, family-friendly future for East Boston; and is united against a casino at Suffolk Downs.

Family establishes Wally Bowe Fund; First Event April 11

Darlene Bowe, wife of the late Wally Bowe, has established a fund in his name to benefit the Salesian Boys & Girls Club.

Wally was a family friend from my days on Chelsea Street and the Salesian Boys Club. There is not a day that goes by where we don't miss Wally and all the values he embodied.

The following letter was sent out to Wally's friends in East Boston and beyond.

Dear ………………………….:

Wally Bowe spent much of his life giving selflessly to others. Working for decades in East Boston, at the Salesian Boys & Girls Club, Savio High School and the Umana Middle School, Wally made a tangible impact on the lives of thousands of young people. Everyone who knew him knew that Wally was a popular guy in the community, but no one was prepared for the amazing number of people who came to pay their respects when he suddenly passed away nearly four years ago. He was truly admired and loved throughout East Boston and beyond.

In addition to his work in the community, Wally was a wonderful husband and father. Now, those of us who knew him best have created The Wally Bowe Fund – not only to keep his memory alive, but to continue the good work he did every day as a coach, teacher and role model for local youth. The fund, administered by his wife, daughters Jillian and Janae, and others in the community, will provide support to the Salesian Boys & Girls Club, a non-profit that Wally attended as a young man and where he worked for 25 years.

The fund will host its first event on April 11 at the Revere VFW, and we hope that you will be able to attend. In addition, we are seeking donations to defray the cost of the evening and to make a contribution to the Salesian Boys & Girls Club, a program that has been serving children and teens from East Boston and surrounding communities since 1945. The club offers an after-school program during the school year as well as a all-day summer program. Young people of all ages receive homework help, take part in athletics, use their creativity in arts and crafts, and become involved in many other activities and programs in a safe, structured environment.

Wally was dedicated to the Salesian Boys & Girls Club and to the work he did with young people. It is now up to us to keep alive his spirit and to work together to give our children opportunities for education, fitness, socialization and fun. Please join me in this mission.

My sincere thanks,

Darlene Bowe

The MEB Peewees took on the Nashua Panthers. The Mustangs struck first with a great up ice pass from Ronan Valarese to John Bernbaum who lit the lamp with 8:28 left in the 1st period. The Panthers fought back to tie it minutes later. The 2nd period saw an MEB breakdown as Nashua scored two fast goals to take the lead 1-3. Goaltender Kevin Ivany showed mental strength and shook off a tough few minutes. MEB found momentum behind Marc Giordano's end to end drive that finished with the bisket in the basket. Gio wasn't done yet as he passed on a rail to Corey Rufo to tie it up going into the 3rd period. The last period saw Gio tripped up in the act of one-timing a gift from Anthony Bocchino and a penalty shot that found the back of the net to take the lead 4-3. Gio picked up another goal with an assist by Rufo followed by Joe Melanson who picked up the puck in the corner and made his own opportunity. With that the Peewee's mark their first win of the season as they begin to gel as a team after a shaky first half of the season.

East Boston Chamber to hold installation of new officers on January 30

The Walsh Response to MGC: City will protect Eastie, C-Town residents

City of Boston Files Petitions with Mass. Gaming Commission, Preserves City’s Rights to Both Host and Surrounding Community Status, Compels Information Sharing with Communities

Action Required to Meet Tonight’s Gaming Commission Deadline; Mayor Walsh Reaffirms Commitment to Protect the Interests of the Residents of Charlestown, East Boston and the City of Boston

The City of Boston today petitioned the Massachusetts Gaming Commission in order to preserve the interests of the City, its residents, businesses and visitors, in the development of proposed Mohegan Sun and Wynn resort destination casinos. The petition preserves the City’s right to assert host community status for both proposals, without waiving its rights to surrounding community status. The petition also asks the Gaming Commission to compel both proponents to share information with the communities that would be most impacted by their proposals.

“We believe this unrestricted route is the best path forward to protect the residents of East Boston and Charlestown, and the City of Boston as a whole,” Mayor Walsh said. “These applicants must have a more open dialogue with the people of Boston, particularly those neighborhoods that will be most impacted. At any time, if the facts indicate that Boston is a host city, we preserve its right to withdraw from surrounding community negotiations.”

The City also petitioned the Gaming Commission, in part, to reconsider its previous denial of Boston’s request for an extension. On Thursday, January 9, the City requested an extension of 30 days from the Commission deadline, in order to review 43,000 pages of documents provided to the City with just five business days to review. The vast majority of the documents were provided to the City for the first time and warrant careful review and analysis. The City’s reasonable request for an extension was denied by the Gaming Commission on the afternoon of Friday, January 10. The City had requested the extension in order to review and assess the documents; request and obtain additional information, clarification and supplementation of the filings; and to receive detailed input from the proponents.

While preserving its rights to host status, the City’s Petition also asked the Gaming Commission to have both the Wynn and Mohegan Sun applicants supplement their filings with the Commission, and if they fail to do that, for the Commission to designate Boston a surrounding community.

The petition also asked the Gaming Commission to compel both Mohegan Sun and Wynn to cooperate fully with the City, providing any and all information requested by the City so that it may best evaluate its status as host or surrounding community and properly evaluate the two proposals in relation to the City.

Supporting Walsh, No Eastie Casino steps up opposition to MGC ruling: "Revere Casino is Illegal; East Boston is a Host Community"

NO EASTIE CASINO STEP UP THE PRESSURE!

To our friends and neighbors:

Thank you for your persistence in fighting back as the Mass Gaming Commission seeks to silence our voices and move ahead with an illegitimate process. As you may know, Mayor Marty Walsh asked the gaming commission for one month to allow his legal team to review the lengthy host community agreement to determine if Boston is a host community (as, in the case of the proposed Revere casino, we believe
research will prove it is) or a surrounding community (as Mohegan Sun argues).

The Gaming Commission -- which granted the extension to Suffolk Downs to allow them to rework this proposal and have a new vote -- denied Mayor Walsh's request. They gave him until Monday to agree to begin negotiations as a surrounding community. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!

Mayor Walsh and his legal team have taken the right approach to date. The decision and statement they make today, Monday, is a critical one. We must ask them to speak out against the unfair ruling of the Mass Gaming Commission--and to put the Commission on notice that the city of Boston will not tolerate this. Mayor Walsh is our new mayor; he promised in his inaugural address to listen to the people of Boston

and to have open and transparent government. We applaud this commitment. He must listen to the people of East Boston and do everything in his power to ensure the vote we took is respected.

Revere Residents Unite to Oppose Rushed, Harmful Mohegan Casino

Revere, MA – Revere residents who are opposed to the proposed Mohegan Sun casino at Suffolk Downs have joined together to form the group, “Don’t Gamble on Revere,” a volunteer-led official ballot question committee asserting that residents of the historic, family-oriented city should always have a say in what happens to the future of their community. The group exists to convince Revere neighbors that voting NO at the Feb. 25 referendum will protect Revere from the invasion of a major corporation that would dictate a future that best suits its own gains rather than considering Revere’s.

"We’re gaining support daily from Revere residents who are opposed to the casino," says Joseph Catricala, spokesperson for Don’t Gamble on Revere, "Many residents are concerned about how a casino in their backyards could impact their families. I’ve heard a number of residents say they would move out of Revere if a casino comes. We are very concerned a casino will bleed our community dry."

Specifically, Catricala points to impacts such as increased traffic, pollution, crime, and numerous other social problems as reasons to oppose the development. Additionally, the group believes the arrival of a casino will decrease property values and raise taxes.

"The host community agreement does not provide the city with enough money to pay for the impact a casino will have on Revere," Catricala adds. "The proposed casino will kill the local economy by removing jobs and cause local businesses to close. When residents begin to gamble their paychecks away at the proposed casino, how will they have any money left to spend on the local economy?"

Don’t Gamble on Revere points to casinos elsewhere whose intent is to keep customers on-site rather than encouraging them to visit local businesses. Revere’s Broadway businesses cannot compete with the proposed casino’s glitzy restaurants, spas, and shops, the group says.

As the Feb. 25 vote approaches, Revere casino opposition is gaining momentum. Don’t Gamble on Revere leadership say the group will reach out to voters through telephone calls, mailings, door-to-door visits, and informative community events. Numerous families have put up "vote no" signs in yards and windows, and volunteer meetings occur each Tuesday at 6:30 PM until the day of the vote.

"Don’t Gamble on Revere is concerned about the future generation of Revere," says Don’t Gamble on Revere spokesperson Catricala. "We agree with casino backers that Revere needs revitalization, jobs, and additional funding to improve community services, but the difference lies in the solution. A casino is not the answer to improving the city of Revere. The long-term effects far outweigh any short-term benefits that a casino could bring to Revere. It is not worth it. Revere can do better."
